I like this a lot. I LOVE the red umbrella. My thought on this is did you consider having the father squat down to her eye level? I was just asking because as a dad I usually like to be at eye level with my kids, i guess to me I feel like they feel more comfortable, more of a connection and less intimidating. Especially with your dramatic lighting and black and white approach I think your closeup shot of the girl will be so powerful if you could see them both. Just a thought. Great work Katie.  

gurl this is so awesome !!  both are interesting though i prefer the first.it just contrasts more to me. also there feels like more of a balance with the first . 
any who the rain effect is awesome and the textures give it a wet feel . 

Like it!  Got to admit I liked the first image better.   The girl pops more to me in that one.

Nice concept and a great jumping off point. I question the decision to offset the girl out from under the spotlight; she would have fallen right on the third if she were centered, which is good practice in general. I'd try to make her pop out more by increasing your tonal contrast.

I like that darker shadow, and because of the tonal variation, I'm drawn to the subject's face more. This is a definite improvement in my opinion =]
