Illustrated Map Attempt

Hi everyone! Below is my (long, probably rambling) answers to the unit one questions. I'm really excited to get started and look forward to your feedback as my map progresses :) Thanks and have a great day!

Why am I making this map?

I joined this class because I want to improve my ability to make maps. One of the services that I offer (I get bored easily so I have a pretty lengthy services list!) is to create custom-designed wedding invitation suites, including a map card. I currently make basic maps for these, tracing over google / drawn maps in Illustrator and sometimes add in line drawings of venue / hotel buildings.

What I would like to create is more illustrative / colourful / whimsical maps that show activities or areas of interest near wedding venues, which would be especially helpful for destination wedding invites.

For my class project, I want to create a map with this look but that's more personal to me rather than for a client. I think it would be easier to be creative and try something new if I don't have to worry about the opinions of anyone beyond Anne and my classmates. I'm debating a few options; to create a map of places I visited in the South of France last year, to create a road trip map of the trek from Newmarket, Ontario (where I live) to the Osheaga Festival in Montreal that I'll be making this August, or to create a road trip map of the places in Costa Rica that I'd like to visit soon. Wow that was really long.

Why am I the expert to create this map?

I'm the expert to create this map because I either took or am planning the trips that I want to create my map around.

Who is my target audience?

I'd like to be able to include my final project as part of my portfolio for potential clients to see as an example of what I could create for them. Does that count as a target audience?

What level of detail do I need to include?

I'd like to include street names, location names, loose / hand drawn-style illustrations, and would like to set up a colour code with colour and texture.

Do I want my final project to be printed or digital?

I would like to set up my final project for print, likely as a poster.

“Dear classmates, I need your help/expertise/
guidance on how to.....”

Make my project look awesome and keep the directional part of it clear.
