Iguana in the style of Molly Mendoza

Iguana in the style of Molly Mendoza - student project

I really admire the complex, layered style of Molly Mendoza's illustrations and I wanted try and emulate that. She is very good at using negative space to tell a story, and while I didn't succeed in that aspect, it did push me to think about how I can work on that in the future.

This is my original ink drawing. Molly uses a lot of washes in her work and that is something I wouldn't generally do, so this was new territory for me.

Then I took the illustration to Photoshop, and using separate plant elements I scanned in, coloured and finished the drawing. Almost all the elements are hand drawn.
