My name's Chris and I'm a graphic designer from Cornwall, UK.
Over the last couple of years I have designed a number of tees for myself and for London Loves LA but they have all been based on my simple, monoline style that I use through my branding projects.
I wanted to do this course to develop my illustration skills and really give myself a challenge. I have loved Johnny Cupcakes for a couple of years now and really enjoy the variety in their brand. Fun-loving, tongue in cheek, pop culture referencing design wizards. That's what they are. I like the way that despite all of the variety, you can tell within seconds that it is a JC shirt through the sense of humour and the insane details.
So I have decided to do a tee for the JC brand. My favourite designs are always the ones referencing pop culture so I wanted my concept to be playing off a movie that I loved last year, Drive. I think that the dark, moody imagery from the official posters would be the perfect place to inject a bit of frosting fun. Initial idea is to play off one of the posters, changing the name of the film to Bake, obviously starring Johnny Cupcakes. With 'The Driver' standing there, I want to mainly use highlights to pull out the shape of the figure on the dark shirt, so it shouldn't be too heavy. I also have an idea for an amendment to the famous Scorpion jacket... Very rough initial sketch below..
I'm looking forward to getting involved in this creative process with all of you, can't wait to see the end results!
