I Like Big Books...

SKETCHING — THUMBNAILS

Here are my first three thumbnails. I was planning on exploring several other concepts, but I really like the book cover look of 2 and 3. Unless something else comes to me, this is the direction I'm headed.

LETTERING WARM-UP (continued)

I thought I'd try at least one version in a graffiti style. I like it, but it doesn't really have the feel I'm looking for.

LETTERING WARM-UP

Here are some sketches from the warm-up stage. I'm liking the styles of #8 and #10, as well as the the thin serif letters from #1. I may explore those directions a bit more. I also want to look into some more hip-hop/graffiti influenced styles.

PHRASE CHOICE

I actually came to this project with a phrase already in mind. My wife came across a tote bag online (probably on Pinterest) that featured the phrase "I Like Big Books and I Cannot Lie" set in Avant Garde, and she immediately fell in love with it and asked me to somehow incorporate the idea into the decor of our study. She suggested stenciling it on the wall, but I'm thinking more along the lines of a framed print.

BRAINSTORMING AND REFERENCE MATERIAL

As I'm sure most people reading this already realized, the phrase is a spoof of the first line of Sir Mix-a-lot's 1992 hit song "Baby Got Back". As such, my brainstorming list was mostly a combination of descriptions of classic books and early '90s hip-hop references.  I also threw together this mood board:

My tastes definitely run closer to the book covers than the hip-hop albums. Specifically, Jessica Hische's designs for the Barnes and Noble Classics series (bottom left of the photo above) really hits a sweet spot for me. I think that kind of lettering treatment could work, but it might be fun to try to work in some rap-inspired elements as well.
