I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

I know why the caged bird sing is an autobiography of Maya Angelou.

The book covers her age 3 to her late teens.

In the book she narrates how she and her brother are sent to live with her grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas when she is only 3 years old. She tells how abandoned she felt by her parents and how difficult it was to live in the rural south around the 1930’s /40‘s as a person of color.

When she is older she goes to live with her mom in St. Louis and is raped at the age of 8 by a close friend of the family. After this she goes through a period when she does not speak.

She moves back to Stamps and eventually moves to California to be with her mother. As a teen in California Maya becomes a homeless teen, she becomes the first black street car conductor in San Francisco and becomes a mother.

This is just a quick tid bit of the book. I’m no writer.

But....

When I think of Maya Angelou the words poised, dignified and elegant come to mind. A person who can face many obstacles and still have grace and elegance.

I added some sketches that used the letter A as the bones (ie..Jessica's tutorials) instead of images to form the letter A.

I just added this sketch. I thought the branches could show the growth of character from child to teen . The bird has head lifted upward in song, but is enclosed in circle. Here are some words that I jotted down while reading this book:

abandonment, rape, JimCrow, beauty, strength, small southern town, awkward, polite,

longing, quiet supression, homeless, silent, confused, shrink, compassion, godly, lift,

strive, hide, oppressed, feels weighed down, awakening, dignity, wanting
