How to Draw Step by Step for Beginners

You do have the ability to draw, even if you don’t realize it yet. You can learn how to draw, even if you don’t have much experience and you haven’t really drawn anything you’ve been proud of in the past. If you’re willing to put the time into learning how to draw and learning how to get the details right from the beginning, it is possible for you to learn to draw anything you want to draw.

Drawing lessons are going to take you from the complete beginner to someone who can draw realistic images like the human body. They’re going to provide you with the instruction you need to go from drawing a stick figure to drawing a lion that looks like a real lion. You can choose from many different lessons, depending on what you want to learn to draw.

When you’re looking into the lessons available, look for ones that teach you how to draw step by step for beginners. This is going to give you the help you need to be able to learn to draw easily. The lessons are going to break down the drawing process into steps that make it easy for you to sketch the basic shape and then add onto it to create the image you have in your mind.

Gather the Right Supplies

You need at least a few basic supplies to get started drawing, but you don’t need to go out and spend a lot of money on these supplies, and you don't need any software unless you're taking on complicated photo manipulation to achieve a desired effect. Of course, as you get better, you may want to invest in higher quality supplies, but you don’t need to spend a lot in the beginning.

Often, drawing tutorials online will suggest basic supplies you may need to start learning to draw. In general, you’ll need pencils, erasers, and paper. If you’re going to add color to your drawings, colored pencils are an excellent way to start. You can also purchase watercolor pencils that act as both colored pencils and watercolors.

If you need to purchase any supplies, a local arts and crafts store should have everything you need in one place. You can purchase an inexpensive sketchbook for practice, pick up a few pencils to try out, and purchase inexpensive but high-quality erasers. These erasers are usually only a couple of dollars apiece, but they work a lot better than the ones that come on your pencil.

Learn to Draw Lightly

Whether you’re learning how to draw a human body or how to draw animals, the main thing to remember is to draw lightly. If you draw dark lines and press the pencil hard into the paper, you’re going to have trouble erasing your lines later. The lighter your touch, the easier it will be for you to erase unneeded lines later.

When you’re drawing a figure, any figure, step by step, you’ll start with basic shapes and slowly fill them out to create the figure, then you’ll add details. The shapes you draw at the beginning are not going to be needed in the final image, so you’ll need to erase them carefully.  Many of these concepts ring true for portrait photography, from the lighting to composition of the piece, for our photographers out there.

A high-quality eraser makes it easier for you to be precise when you’re erasing, but even a high-quality eraser is not going to completely erase your lines if you draw too dark. It’s far better to start with shapes that are incredibly light, almost difficult to see from a distance, and then get darker when you’re creating the final shape and adding details.

Start with the Basics – Draw a Few Circles

Drawing lessons should have you start at the very beginning. You’ll draw shapes on your paper in the general form of what you want to draw. These won’t really look like what you’re trying to draw right now, but they should have the same basic shape. This is a crucial part of the process and one you need to pay careful attention to while you’re working on it.

When you’re learning how to draw a human body, you need to learn how to get the proportions correct. You don’t want to draw arms that are too short or legs that are way too long with a torso that’s too short. When you start with basic circles, triangles, and lines, you can work on your proportions and make sure everything is correct from the beginning. It’s going to be very hard to change the proportions after you’ve finished this step and started the next one.

Connect the Circles Together to See the Shape Form

The next step you’ll learn when you’re learning how to draw step by step for beginners is how to use those basic shapes to start to see the final form. You’ll need to connect each of the shapes carefully to start to draw the basic form you’re learning.

Take care with this stage as you’ll want to make sure your arms are shaped like arms with muscles, not just straight lines connecting the shoulders with the elbows and hands. You’ll use slightly curved lines, not straight lines, to connect everything together. At this point, your drawing should start to look more like what you’re trying to draw.

Erase Unneeded Lines and Start Filling Out the Shape

Once you have the basic shape created, it’s time to start filling out the shape and adding the details. At this point, you may want to go ahead and erase any lines that aren’t needed. Once you have the basic shape of your figure, you do not need the circles and lines you used in the very beginning. If you have a good quality eraser and you drew them lightly, it should be easy to erase them.

What you’re left with is the outline of the figure as well as some of the details. If you’re using one of the drawing tutorials online to learn how to draw a human figure, the drawing should now be distinguishable as a human figure. There’s still more to go, but you’ve done most of the work and you should be able to see that the proportions are correct by this point.

Add Distinct Features and Other Details

The next step in how to draw a human body or anything else you may be drawing is to add distinct features and other details. If you’re drawing a human figure, this is where you’ll add in the hair, eyes, mouth, nose, and more. Your drawing should start to look more realistic at this point, and you should start to really see your figure taking shape.

This is also the time to draw any clothes or other items for the drawing. Once you have all of these details done, you can also color the image or do any shading necessary to capture shadows in your drawing or to add as much detail as possible to make it look realistic. When you’re done with the distinct features and other details, your drawing will be complete. Even if it’s not perfect, you’ve learned quite a bit and now know how to practice to help your drawings improve.
