How Sweet It Is

I am so in love with type and hand lettering that I'm almost obsessed! And greeting cards. If you send me a beautiful card, we will be best friends for sure!

I have always wanted to create my own cards and invitaions, and I love good design. I was never sure how to go about doing that though. I'm so excited for this class, and I'm making a sweet card for my husband, just to let him know how much I love him!

As much as I love hand lettering, I'm not very good at it. Or at least I didn't think I was! I know I have a long way to go, but in the short evening I spent practicing some of these skills, I have improved so much! I'm very excited to see what I can create, and to know that it's something original I've done will be such an accomplishment!

UPDATE 5/21:

Here are some photos of the beginning of my project.

I couldn't seem to come up with as many words as Mary Kate, but I knew I wanted an old Victiorian ad feel, even if it was more of a hint than anything.

These are a few of the pieces of inspiration I found on pinterest! I went ahead and threw in some of the colors I know I want to use as well.

As I was watching the first videos, I was just doodling, and sketching along. Trying to come up with ideas and using the tips she mentioned, as well as trying to draw out some of the font types she showed us.

As you can see, drawing is NOT necessarily my strongest suit! But, with only a little bit of practice, I felt like I was getting the hang of it a lot better.

I also felt like my thumbnails weren't pulling together the way I wanted, I was mostly slapping them together without enough thought to detail.

So, I re-did them, and I like these versions so much better! I think that I have gotten a much better feel for how I want my layout to look, and the kinds of fonts and details that I want to use.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the ideas I have so far, and I'm feeling more and more confident about the whole thing each day!

UPDATE 5/21 (again):

So, I have my sketch done! I'm very happy with the way it's turning out. I am definitely going more simple than some of the other projects I've seen, but that's what happens when you're a newbie! Overall, it needs some cleaning up, but I feel like it's pretty much where I want it to be at for my project. I don't think I will be adding or changing any of the details.

UPDATE 5/22:

Well, I went ahead and did my first ink of my flyer, and while I really like it, I'm realizing that it's not exactly the look I was first intending to go with at the beginning. I think maybe I got a little over zealous with my inspiration, and it needs detail that I'm not sure I can do.

I even added some color (even though I'm aware that the ink job is very sloppy!) just to see how it would look, and it definitely still needs some work. I think if I trace another sketch, and take my time to tighten things up and add some detail, I will like it better. But, since I'm pressed for time, this color version is going on the card I'm giving to my husband! Maybe I can do a poster of the "final" project down the road.

Yes, I'm definitley getting more of a nautical look than the Victiorian feel I originally wanted to go with.
