How I used LinkedIn To Become A Global Expert In The Daily Deal Industry!

This is a story about how I jabbed my way to the top of a $4 Billion dollar a year industry.

My mentors whether they know it or not are:

Lewis Howes who introduced me to Gary Vaynerchuk who did a webinar from an airport, he was talking about twitter, wine and the Old Spice Guy...

Michael Stelzner... Social Media Examiner and all of his contributors

Buddy Media...Kuno Creative...Hubspot,

LinkedIn, LinkedIn Groups & Emily Chang Bloomberg West

I have been an entrepreneur most of my life, some times a successful entrepreneur, some times an unsuccesfull entrepreneur.

In 2008 social media was gaining a lot of momentum and was becoming popular for some businesses. Most of my business experience was outside sales, introducing new products and services to the market. I had no social media skills to speak of.

I did not know what to do, my business skills were going extinct and I was experiencing age discrimination. Everything I was, was being phased out. For the first time in my life I was faced with a tough decision...change or die.

It was 3 years ago in October that I decided to learn as much as I could about social media. In order to learn and use social media you have to pick a subject to write about, tweet about, start conversations about and share stories and insights about, so I picked the "Daily Deal Industry".

I now had a new found passion...I loved social media and I loved the Daily Deal Industry... I was working 70-80 hours a week for nothing. I had never worked so hard in my life, for so little. I had never felt so good about giving so much away for free.

LinkedIn was perfect place for me to share my knowledge and connections. I wanted to learn social media for business B2B..not for talking to my friends. LinkedIn's groups were starting to get traction.. So I started a few LinkedIn groups and managed a couple more.

FYI the Daily Deal Industry is a new industry, started by a company called Groupon, the CEO’s name is Andrew Mason. By 2009 his company did $33 million in sales, 2010 was $650 million, 2011 $650 per quarter. Groupon was the fastest growing company in the history of the internet. Now there are thousands and thousand of companies selling deals, to meet the global demand generating about $4-6 billion dollars anuually.

In 2011 and 2012 I shared, commented on, read, understood and studied more articles about the Daily Deal Industry on LinkedIn than anyone else in the world. As a result of my sharing and commenting I am in the TOP 1% of most viewed profiles on LinkedIn.

I reached out to connect with many of the CEO's who's articles I shared or commented on. I wanted to know more.

Before I knew it, there was a 100 CEO's in my groups, then 200, then 500. They were coming in from every country in the world. Now there is over 2500 members in the group, which is not a real big number, it's who they are that counts and what percentage of the multi-billion dollar industry they represent.

In early 2011 a new TV Show called Bloomberg West aired on the Bloomberg channel. I started to watch this show everyday, the shows host Emily Chang interviewed many of the start-up founders that I was interested. It did not take long before some of the guests were contacting me to speak at some of the Daily Deal Industry events that I was now helping to promote. I remember sending the host, Emily Chang a tweet at Christmas saying "Merry Christmas" from Darrell Ellens in Vancouver, you #1 fan.

She replied, Darrell your the shows #2 fan, my grandmother is the #1 fan. Now this story does not mean much to anyone else but it sure does to me.
