I've just finished reading Joe Hill's "Horns", so instead of working on a poem I've decided to design a cover for the book instead. Here is a description of the book:
Merrin Williams is dead, slaughtered under inexplicable circumstances, leaving her beloved boyfriend Ignatius Perrish as the only suspect. On the first anniversary of Merrin's murder, Ig spends the night drunk and doing awful things. When he wakes the next morning he has a thunderous hangover . . . and horns growing from his temples. Ig possesses a terrible new power to go with his terrible new look—a macabre gift he intends to use to find the monster who killed his lover. Being good and praying for the best got him nowhere. Now it's time for revenge . . .
It's time the devil had his due. . . .
I personally loved the book, there is a movie coming out on halloween I believe based off the book, if your thinking of seeing it I definetely reccomend the book first.
Okay so for my project I started with writing down a list of words that came to mind during/after reading the book, here they are:
And here a few early sketches, I just put down whatever came to mind, from there I choose about 3-5 concepts I want to explore.
Here is my first two covers, and critiques are welcome.
I wanted to create a minimalistic cover that captures your attention right away, I used the image of the heart because this is a revenge love story, and the horns because the main character has begun to grow horns.
Here was some type explorations:
For this design I wanted to have the snakes weaving and going through the heart and shooting up to appear as horns. Since the main character Ig is devastated I wanted to show his heart being destroyed in a way, the snakes could be a metaphor for the evil that has done this to him, or the fact that in the book when he begins his transformation snakes being to start following him around.
I'm still working on the other covers which will be up shortly.
I got some recognition from Joe Hill himself
