Hoop in the City

Milestone I

As a lifelong basketball fan and player, I have always been fascinated by the mystical connection between basketball and New York City.  While there may be better "hotbeds" of talent in other parts of the country, no single city can compare when it comes to the cultural significance of the sport - with the sheer number of courts, players, and legends, basketball is engrained in every block of every neighborhood. Bobbito Garcia and Kevin Couliau created a documentary called "Doin' it in the Park" to showcase NYC pick-up basketball (cover photo credit to Kevin) and the characters that have defined the game over multiple generations. My goal with this photo essay is to pay homage to the structures and systems that support this love between a city and a sport. (Celtics for life, though)

Potential scales I want to work with: The court, the gym, the ball, the hoop, the concrete, the parquet, the arena, the court amongst the city block.

Target subjects: West 4th St, Madison Square Garden, waterfront courts, high school gym, Rucker Park, worn down court lines, cracks in the courts, rims with and without nets, metal and glass backboards
