Hidden in Plain Sight: Geocaches Waiting to be Discovered

For Iowa Outdoors: Iowa DNR's bi-monthly magazine.

Wherever you find yourself in Iowa, whether sitting under the gold dome of the capitol or running amongst the Burr Oaks during October fall, you are surrounded by geocaches hidden in plain sight. With over 15,000 geocaches hidden across the state, they are easy to miss unless you know what you’re looking for, and this article will aim to get the readers seeing clearly the geocaching adventure that awaits them around every turn.

With help from friends at IGO – Iowa Geocachers Organization, as well as my contacts at GroundSpeak (“Inside the World of Geocaching”The Clymb, September 2015), this piece could run as a feature article (600-700 words) and include pictures and quotes from one of four Geocaching Iowa events happening in the month of November:

  • Geocaching International Film Festival – Maquoketa – Nov. 5th
  • Gold Digger Day 1 & 2 – Monticello – Nov. 7th & 8th
  • Prairie Ramble – Maquoketa – Nov. 7th

Conversely, I could also see this idea running as a shorter photographic journey (200-300 words), exploring 5-10 of the more unique Iowa geocaches, and efficiently explaining the sport and how to get involved. I have attached a few previously published photos to this email. Either way, geocaching is a sport that focuses on sustainable excitement for the outdoors and I believe it would be worth exploring on the pages of Iowa Outdoors.

I have been featured in nine regional magazines and exclusively have written and photographed about adventure related topics ranging from a Mt. Rainer Hut-to-Hut Skiing Destination Piece for Adventures Northwest and most recently, a Passions Piece about Des Moines-local Steve Cannon for the latest edition of DSM Magazine. I am interested in lending my writing assets to the outdoors, and build my portfolio with the editorial reputation of Iowa Outdoors.
