Hello Spring

Spring has Sprung- well at least here in the Pacific North West. It became clear by mid February that this was not going to be a normal year. Streets are fully lined with Cherry Blossoms, snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils and an assortment of blooms that are not usually seen until late March and even April. We are even having an abundance of sunshine and coupled with our traditional mild weather  we have taken to sipping wine and snacking outside. With all this buzz and excitement selecting a theme was easy... Hello Spring! It also gave me a great excuse to head outside and take pictures of this years blooms! For this project I worked a little backwards. I took photos first- then brainstormed keywords for my inspiration board. (you can find my working board here Pinterest Board)

Next up, my colour palette. Going through my photos over the past year, I noticed I am very attracted to reds, oranges bordering on coral/pink. I got stuck on one image that I took last spring in the desert. My family and I were fortunate enough to go the Joshua Tree National Park days after it rain so the cacti were in bloom and I snapped this pic to share to instagram!

Sketches Sketches Sketches..... (up soon)...

Playing around with handrawn sketches from photo reference in both ink and blob brush...  and here are the final rendered sketches in Ai.

Now to draw from my mood board and palette!!!

Been Working on colouring in my illustrations!!

I am not thrilled with all of them and some need some tweaking but I have been using all of the different methods that Bonnie was talking about to A) render the drawings and B) colouring them in... The Reflect and rotate tools are now my favorite and combining them with pathfinder I have been able to make some really cool shapes... May be going off on a tangent!!

The next image uses the symbol sprayer to make a fun little repeat with some of the illustrations!

After losing a great deal of work- someone came along and unplugged my computer mid save I think I am more pleased with my recreated work... Not done yet but it is starting to come together.

I played and played. I really enjoyed stretching my skills and pushing my comfort zone. Before this I was doing pretty standard repeats. I wasn'r layering and overlapping- I really (thought) prefer clean simple geometrics. But when I look at inspiration and some of the textiles I collect I love over the top florals that are cram packed with abundance. Here is my final repeat. I dropped a lot of the motifs that I created, and stuck with my large flowers and my little abstract flowers. I feel like the branches and buds were not doing it for me. I hope you enjoy.

Just for the fun of it I made another colourway using a brighter palette and got to know the recolouring tools...

I got so much out of this class and look forward to the next one. Cheers, Megan Carroll.
