Happy Mother's Day

April 29, 2014

I decided I wanted to do the lettering for a Mother's Day card I will give to my mom and mother-in-law.  I wanted the text to look feminine because I knew I wanted a flower theme and a something my mom would like, so I decided to do the text with a lot of flourishes.

This my initial sketch:

I redrew it a couple of times and came up with two versions.  One like the sketch and another one with more flourishes:

I liked the first one better, but looking at the text with my artwork, I decided on the latter because it filled the space better.

I spent a long time cleaning it up in Photoshop.  I was SOOOO happy to learn of the warp tool in the videos!! I use that tool all the time now in my other work as well.  I love it.

Here is my my cleaned up version:

I had to straighten it as well as clean up.  I'm still not 100% happy with the top right hand curve....

Here is my final, colorized and placed with the artwork.  I tinkered a bit with that curve.

I might redraw just that curve and fix it later!

I really, really enjoyed this class, and I've been using a lot of the methods on preparing art for vector in my other work.  I also want to do more calligraphy and I bought Molly's book, and I'm looking forward to its arrival! :)
