Hand Lettering Turned into Type Design

Hand Lettering Turned into Type Design - student project

I knew from the beginning I wanted to bring some culture into my piece in one way or another. I wanted it to evoke a feeling of the Danish beaches, but it should also have a hint of our beloved author H. C. Andersen. ‘Danmark’ is how we spell ‘Denmark’ in Danish. I saw another student writing his or her country in one of the other projects uploaded to this class.

I drew and sketched the letters à la Martina. When I had drawn one sketch, I corrected it by layering another piece of tracing paper on top of it. I scanned my final sketch at 600 dpi and I opened it in Illustrator. I traced my letters, turned my template off and corrected my letters as much as needed. I used plugins by Astute Graphics: InkScribe and VectorScribe. They give me much more control over my paths.

Type design is something I wish to do. Letters and languages interest me so I was naturally drawn to this class. Thank you, Martina!
