Hand Lettering An Envelope

July 25, 2014

It took a few extra days but I have my sketch ready. I traced it a few times to get the positioning in about the right spot. Might tweak it some more but I would love to hear any feedback before moving on to the next step of putting it on the envelope. I also have many other ideas for many other envelopes. I think a monster has been created. :)

Wow, can't believe how fast time has flown by. I have been doing lots of practice lettering and more research and sketching. I will hopefully have sketches ready for tomorrow. Lots of other projects kept getting in the way of this one which made me sad.

My first step in designing something is always look at other work out there and assemble a mood board. Erik, you'll notice some Mark Kate McDevitt pieces one of my other favourite hand lettering artists.

I am hoping to create a vintage feeling hand drawn envelope with some elegant flourishes. My mail recipient loves bees so I am going to try and incorporate a small bee illustration in the design maybe using negative space with the yellow of the envelope showing through. Her maiden name is Oakley so I may put the bee on an oak leaf for an extra connection. Crossing my fingers that the sketching goes as well as testing out the new materials.

I couldn't find the exact chalk markers but found some similar. I also already had a brush pen and a sharpie white paint pen which I thought would come in handy for adding some highlights and embelishments later.

My supplies are Craft Smart chisel tip chalk markers, Sharpie white paint pen, Faber-Castell white India Ink pen, and a Prismacolor black brush pen. Not sure which ones will end up in the final design but I'd rather have something and not need it than be missing a supply when creativity strikes.

Then I started to make marks and write letters. I didn't really look at a typeface at this point, more getting used to the materials since I haven't used these markers before.

I was also seeing what colour combinations I liked and how the colours looked when they were laid on top of one another.
