HAPPY CUPCAKE PONIES

I'm certain you're all thinking, 'what the hell does that mean?' It's a quote from my son,Vann, when he was about 8. We were sitting at the dinner table as a family and got into a deep, uncomfortable conversation. My son was upset and just said, 'Can't we just talk about something else like happy cupcake ponies?!' Everyone just broke out in fits of laughter. We still use it today to diffuse heated talks. It conjures up pure joy and abandon.

MOOD BOARD

"Abandon" is fireworks and roller coasters and gutteral laughing and singing even when you can't sing at all. The joy you feel from skipping and balloons and confetti and sunshine after a very cloudy day. Typography to represent this emotion feels like writing with a sparkler on a summer night or making letters with objects. Colors are bright and cheery.

Did all of these in about 30  minutes...don't know which one(s) to explore further. Help!

SKETCH

As suggested by Mete, I envisioned my idea of what a "happy cupcake pony" looks like. It got the stamp of approval from my son too!

SKETCH REVISIONS

Based on some feedback, I've added a pony snout to the cupcake and shifted the balloons over to make them feel more like they are trailing behind this happy guy.

FINAL PIECE

To capture the joy of abandon, I wanted to make sure I saturated the color as much as possible. This is a scan of my final piece done completely in watercolor. It's been a wonderful experience, Mete! Hope everyone has a Happy Cupcake Pony kind of day!
