Guardian of the Temple Wind

Guardian of the Temple Wind - student project

I wasn't able to find a Georgia O'Keefe painting that really spoke to me, so I branched out and started looking through vintage Japanese woodblock prints. I loved the colors and composition of Katsushika Hokusai's 'Suspension Bridge at Mount Gyôdô, Ashikaga' from circa 1834. Using that as inspiration for both color and elemental theme, I followed the 3 sketch approach (my 3rd sketch was my more polished ink drawing). I enjoyed the process of adding in tons of decorative details, both by drawing the easier patterns or by utilizing a sourced image of a piece of vintage Japanese silk for the more complex interior of the coat.
