Green Light Means Go

Like so many people I have a lot of aspirations, interests and ideas, but getting from parked to full speed is harder than I'd like. I work full time, and sure, I could quit my day job to chase these dreams, but I really see no reason why I shouldn't be able to do it outside of my job, which I quite love. I have an enormous backlog of books that I want to not only read, but actually be able to talk about and describe to people afterwards. And that's just the beginning - there's so much that I want to be able to do. I just need to be able to learn and remember things more effectively.

1 - First things first. I have a huge backlog of books that I don't just want to read, but want to understand. I recently spent an agonising month reading the relatively simple book "Zen Mind, Beginners Mind" and I couldn't really talk about it. This makes me quite sad.

By July 31st I will be able to read 500 words per minute with 60% comprehension/retention or higher. I will read Seth Godin's Linchpin by July 7, and Allan Watts The Way of Zen by July 31, and be able to hold a ten minute conversation on the key points of both books.

2 - By August 30 I will limit hesitation and increase speed with design and illustration outside of my day working practice. I will be able to produce 1 work per day, such as a logo or part of an illustration (line work, colour, texture, shading), or 10 sketches with substantial detail so that I may explore and express my visual ideas more freely.

3 - Between September 1 and and December 20 I will be able to read 600 words or more on a particular topic with 60% comprehension/retention, be able to recall and prepare detailed notes on the key points of these texts. Key points will include not just the why and reason for the text but more detailed information such as names and titles and their meanings, dates and figures, works and categories (related to art and science etc), processes and flows as required.

I will demonstrate this by completing a diploma that allows me to be a more effective design entrepreneur.

4 - I have a shocking memory. In my previous task I will have tried to tackle this problem. Between December 31 and March 30 I will be able to recall, recognise and produce 1900 Japanese Kanji characters so that I may be able to read a novella in Japanese, and thus communicate in Japanese more effectively. I wish to be an intermediate communicator in Japanese language by April 2016.

Thank You,

And good luck to you all on your journey.
