Gouache illustration: Behold the sloth king - student project

Hello!

This class was super helpful, but also quite challenging. Especially for someone like me, who seldom plans things out properly, going through all the different stages before painting the final image was new and kind of tested my patience. But I learned a lot and I can absolutely see the benefits of this process.

When I first started sketching, I looked for some sloth reference pictures and I immediately found one I liked a lot. Thus the idea of the sloth king was born:

I then looked for some colour palettes on coolors.com, inked my sketch, scanned it in and very inexpertly coloured in three iterations of my illustration. I then decided to go with the third version for my colour scheme. (Although, looking back now, I also quite like the middle one)

And then I started to paint. At the beginning I was quite scared, because everything looked quite streaky. Gouache is a wonderful medium, however sometimes it can be very hard to get the right consistency! But in the end, it turned out alright, I think. I used quite a few layers and I think I worked a little more opaquely than Vanessa. Anyway, here is the final result:

I'd be happy to hear any thoughts or advice you might have. I had a lot of fun with this! Thanks so much, Vanessa!
