Going Round in Circles: How to Create Curved or Circular Text in Photoshop

For my first class, I'll be sharing a skill I've been using a lot recently: typing curved or circular text in Photoshop. Possible course info is as follows:

DESCRIPTION:

Do you have an idea for a circular logo or graphic for your business?

If you've ever tried to type on a circle or a curve in Photoshop with no prior experience, you'll know that it's not as intuitive as it sounds.

Watch as I walk you through how to create curved text in Photoshop CS6. I'll show you how to create clockwise and anti-clockwise circular text, as well as how to type on any type of curved line. You'll also find out how to make your text look more legible and attractive.

This is a beginner-friendly tutorial! No jargon or tech nonsense: just quick, clear-cut instructions to help you on your way. All you need to get started is Photoshop (I'm using CS6, but the same basic instructions apply to all editions) and a very basic understanding of how to use it.

PROJECT:

Your project for this class is to create your own circular or curved type in Photoshop and post an image of your design. Don't worry if your result isn't quite right -- post your work in progress, and I'll help you through it.

OUTLINE:

  1. Introduction (screen capture) - Example of curved text & basic overview of what we'll be doing.
  2. Drawing Your Circle or Curve (screen capture) - Showing how to create circles (shapes and paths) as well as irregular curved paths
  3. Typing Clockwise - Showing how to type text on a path, which is clockwise by default.
  4. Typing Anti-Clockwise - Showing how to create anti-clockwise text using what we learned in video 3.
  5. Improving the Look - Showing how to alter kerning etc. to make the text look better.
