Go The Extra Mile

After lettering daily for a year, I finally mustered up the courage to take a Skillshare class.

I partcipate in a few lettering prompts over on Instagram. This month, I came across the Robin Crow quote - "Go the extra mile and you will stand out in a crowd." Right away, I started to visualize the various ways I might illustrate these words.

So what does it mean to GO THE EXTRA MILE?

  • Work Hard
  • Don't Give Up
  • Appreciate The Journey

BRAINSTORM

As I'm brainstorming, I picture a winding road with a sign in flashing lights...

Here are some of the ways I might letter keywords in the quote:

Stand Out - IN LIGHTS / MARQUEE

GO - WHITEWALL TIRES / MOTION

PINTEREST TIME | Mood Board

I know. RETRO - VINTAGE. Who doesn't love retro and vintage?!

I just can't shake the marquee style for "...Stand Out..." and it only seems natural to imagine Old Hollywood, classic cars and muted color pallet.

As I sketch various ideas, I'm trying to decide whether or not to have an actual road or just banner -

After completing some rough sketches, I knew I wanted to take the design farther.

This quote needs some fun illustrations to emphasize it's overall message.

Enter an old school gas pump, a winding road, and a sign post.

Yay, starting to get excited - I can already picture this with color. After lots of refining and rearranging...

I had a couple hiccups here and there. Scan. Trace. Vector. Clean Up.

I am already looking forward to taking this into Lettering II - Color & Texture.

But, first...

I decided to remove the word GAS from the pump, and I would love to hear your thoughts on whether it should stay or go. I was afraid viewers might read the word as a part of the quote.

UPDATE: NOV 17th.

Thank you for the kind words and encouragement! I have a friend who is a Screen Printer, and I thought I would show some of his recommendations for this piece. I'll be sure to post the final product - super exciting!

TEXTURE: Crumbled Paper and Ink Pad. I wanted it to look like a flyer that you might find on the side of the road.
