Getting to Know My New Home

  • Why am I making this map? For fun? A client? A gift? To showcase my favorite places? Etc.

I've always loved maps since I was a little girl.  In the backseat I studied the thomas guide and learned everything about Los Angeles.

When I left Los Angeles for Harvard, I found comfort in my new home by studying it's streets.  Wandering around in the snow and finding new places brought comfort  to the fact that I was so far away from home.

After returning to Los Angeles for a few years I left again.  Now, I reside in the Bay Area, as a newlywed, discovering a whole new world (yes I'm a Disney kid).

To find that same comfort in a new place, I need to study these cities, SF and Oakland.  Doing so proviedes excitement and confidence.  I want to share all the new discoveries.  To capture them on a simple map or maybe a series.

  • Why am I the expert to create this map?

Being new to this city gives me a fresh vantage.  To see thinks that what everyone else who's lived here for so long misses.

  • Who is my target audience?

Family and friends, blog readers, traverlers and locals

  • Do I want my final project to be printed or digital? How is going to be used/held? What other constraints do I need to keep in mind moving forward?

Digital at first for my blog, would love if after some editing to become print.  Either for home decor or travel advice.

  • What level of detail do I need to include? (Names, addresses, contact info, street names, website, hours, descriptions, color coding, etc.)

Definitely names and general locations.  Maybe addresses in a key or notes with links to the points of interest.

  • Dear class, I need your help/expertise/guidance on how to.....

Graphic design!  I'm very new and would love any assistance ;)
