Getting fitter, thinner, and generally in-shape-er.

used to be in pretty good shape, and was active in martial arts for quite a few years (primarily Aikido with some Ninjutsu, Wing Chun, and Muay Thai tossed in for good measure). Once I got married and bought a house 40 miles from work, the hour-plus one-way commute made training somewhat impractical, so I began training at a dojo near my house - which moved to a location farther away. Finding the time and money to train became more difficult (especially with a newborn), so I finally dropped out.

Since working on computers all day is a fairly sedentary job (and since I really wasn’t paying much attention to what I ate), I started putting on the pounds pretty quickly. Although we typically eat fairly healthy food these days, I just haven’t had the time/energy/motivation to get back into a regular exercise routine, so I haven’t made much progress on losing weight. At this point, my cholesterol and triglyceride levels are much too high (although they have gone down from where they were), and I’m dealing with chronic heartburn, GERD, and possibly obstructive sleep apnea as well.

I’m hoping to (eventually) lose about 50 pounds and two pants sizes, which I think will go a long way towards resolving all of those issues. I have a weight bench, treadmill, and heavy bag at home, so I’m planning on using a combination of strength and cardio training to get back into shape.
