GUILT

STEP 1: SELECTING YOUR TEXT

I decided to adapt ‘DEACON TAYLOR’ from The Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters. This appealed to me because the story in essence is about a hypocritical churchgoer. Deacon Taylor is a part of the prohibition cause, yet drinks in secret on the side.  From this little slice of life, we can probably assume that Taylor probably backslides in other aspects of his life, along with his drinking. Perhaps something as dramatic as cheating on his wife even. The idea of a religious man living an unreligious life is a perfect starting point for internal conflict. Does Taylor truly believe what he studies on Sunday and  ashamed of his missteps, or does Taylor see nothing wrong with his hypocritical life style? This certainly sets up some interesting themes, such as the search for redemption, the idea of original sin and the natural human desires deemed as sin by religion and one’s struggle with such.
