Sarah Barton

graphic designer/type lover

My plan is to make a generic postcard illustrating the word "greetings." I really liked the chromeography site that Martina showed us. I was inspired to create something futuristic, which works well with the word I chose because it reminds me of aliens..."greetings earthling!"

I saved a mixture of images, some type inspiration and some design inspiration. I like the shape of the "atomic" piece. That might make a cool border. I also really like the little design elements like the lines and starts in the red robot package, as well as the way the type is arched.

I was really excited to do something with a lot of fun outer space details, but I felt like my thumbnails were just copying my inspiration too much. The strongest thumbnails to me were influenced more by the chrome typography.

I was still having a hard time narrowing my focus, so I picked my top three favorite thumbnails to refine.

After many, many different versions, I finally came up with something I like. I still get a subtle whimsical detail--I tried to get the "r" to look like a lightning bolt!

This was pretty easy to digitize because it's all straight lines. Some changes I made from sketch to digital: making the g's the same size and adjusting the lightning bold r to come up higher.

Then I added color and other design elements. (I still got to incorporate some other fun outer space details!) I'm really happy with the final. It looks very futuristic.
