From the Midwest

I was raised by my grandparents, and we weren't allowed to eat pork.  So we mostly dined on vegetarian type foods (although we could eat chicken, fish, etc. ).

Also because we were on a budget, we ate a lot of beans.  I hated beans back then.  I like them now but wouldn't dare put any in my potato salad.  

As you mentioned, I'll go for some bacon (Heck, yes I eat pork now), white and green onions. That's just to start.

How does it sound :)
