Project #1: Hand-drawn Map

This took more time than I thought it would because I didn't know what to draw. I wound up drawing a map of my brain space, because someone asked what went on in my head! I don't know if it counts, but it's a map and it's a place, albeit inside my mind.

I'm still not too sure about what I'll be doing for my final project - it's either a visual map of some imaginary place / books that shape me as a person, or mapping a piece of music. Or it could change, since I'm still dithering!

1. Why am I making this map? For fun? A client? a gift? To showcase my favorite places? Etc.

If I wind up mapping a piece of music: Partly for fun, and partly to inspire myself to be more observant in my choral conducting scores! That said, I think it would be a good visual aid to have when I'm teaching my students about score analysis, and the appreciation that goes into the little musical details that they don't immediately see at first glance. 

If I wind up mapping an imaginary place / book influence: To clarify things to myself about certain mental processes / reactions, or just to get this imaginary landscape (or Geography of Lograire, as per Thomas Merton) out of my head and onto paper so it doesn't consume all my waking hours.

2. Why am I the expert to create this map?

Music map: I'm a musician, and a choral conductor - so what goes on in the music score, all the underlying details, are things I must know in order to convey it properly to my students. 

Imaginary place / book influence map: The place originates in my head! And my mental processes, only I can understand, or at least I've been told at least a dozen times that what goes on inside my head is both perplexing and scary to most sane, normal people. It's not quite as bad as it sounds, but I do tend to think a little differently than most of the people I know. 

3. Who is my target audience?

Music map: My students, musicians, anyone who appreciates music or who is intrigued by the many, many layers of depth in one simple musical composition.

Imaginary place / book influence map: Myself, and possibly others who are curious about the insides of my head. Or who might find it useful in some unknown way.


4. What level of detail do I need to include? (Names, addresses, contact info, street names, website, hours, descriptions, color coding etc.)

Music map: I honestly don't know yet. Tentative things are musical dynamic levels, and bits of relevant history for that particular period. Details like cadence points in the music, etc - still on the drawing board, and any suggestions are more than welcome. Colour coding may make an appearance, for repeated motifs. 

Imaginary place / book influence map: Names, relevant buildings or processes, imaginary related street names, descriptions, possibly more. Still don't know.


5. Do I want my final project to be printed or digital? How is it going to be used/ held? What other constraints do I need to keep in mind moving forward? (Note: type can be smaller on printed maps than when viewed on web)

Printed and digital, probably. They both should be able to be folded up. This also means that type can't be too small, and the level of detail can't be too... well, detailed, or else it might get lost in the digitising / printing. Or even when looked at on the web.

6. “Dear classmates, I need your help/expertise/ guidance on how to.....”

Use Photoshop and Illustrator! And also what might be possible, creative ways to map a piece of music, since it's not exactly a road map, but it IS in a way.
