Food and wine and wine and food

I love to cook. I also really enjoy good wine. So naturally these two mesh well.

Last week I set out to open a couple bottles of wine. The first was 14 Hands Hot to Trot 2010. This is a blended wine of  Predominantly Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon with hints of Mourvedre and other select red varieties. I was really looking forward rot trying because I LOVE their Cabernet Sauvignon and its $14/$13 per bottle. 14 hands is a Washington State winery in the Columbia Valley. i really do like many of the reds from Washington State. That night I was making a grilled sirloin steak with sautéed spinach. I opened the bottle and tasted it. Boy oh boy were there tannins and man did I open that bottle too soon. So with that being said a demoted it to cooking wine. I made a really nice Au Poivre sauce for the steak so it worked out really well. I did end up opening a 2011 Cabernet Sav. from Barboursville Winery in Charlottesville. I really enjoyed it.
