Focal Point Print Workshop - Project

Hello Everyone,

I am so excited to be a part of this workshop. It’s going to be so much fun seeing all of the beautiful surface pattern designs. This is not the first project I’ve posted in Bonnie’s class. As Bonnie suggested my most recent updates are at the top of my post while my former project is at the bottom.

To give a little background information on myself –I live in my hometown of Buffalo, New York and I have a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Buffalo State College. While attending Buffalo State I majored in Interior Design. Interior design is a huge passion of mine but I wanted to spread my knowledge base and learn more about design. I am currently getting my associates in Graphic Design and I have fallen in love with illustration and surface pattern design. Creating gives me such joy and I can’t wait to learn more.

After much deliberation, I ended up with my three surface pattern themes…

I had so much fun participating in this workshop! I will be pursuing each of these collections further. I'll update this project in the future with the coordinating patterns for anyone who is interested in seeing them. You can follow me on Instagram as well - @courtney.allyssa

Below is my first project I submitted for Bonnie's class...

Hello, my name is Courtney Schrantz and I just recently started my journey in surface pattern design. I have absolutely loved taking Bonnie's class so far. I can't wait to participate in the next one. I can say without a doubt that I have absolutely fallen in love with designing surface patterns. I originally went to school for interior design and obtained my BFA. I thought I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life but I believe life has a funny little way of setting us off track. I had the opportunity to go back to school so I decided to pursue graphic design. I've always liked to draw and sketch and once I had the technical background to support my drawings, I knew I could do this! I watched my first tutorial on how to design a surface pattern on Skillshare. Ever since I watched that first tutorial (which was only a few weeks ago) all I want to do is create more patterns! To say I am obsessed would be an understatement.

For this project I chose to use the coral reef as my inspiration. I currently reside in Buffalo, NY and all I've been seeing lately is snow, therefore, I wanted to create this pattern as a small escape. I pulled a few images from the internet to get a good color scheme and some ideas going. I also included a few drawings I previously completeld that had a fun coral reef vibe.

Once I had my mood board ready to inspire, I grabbed my sketchbook and started drawing. I created a lot of elements so that I would have a bunch of options to choose from. I also knew I wanted to make my pattern fairly dense. Below are the digital drawings I created in illustrator. I used the blob brush tool for almost all of my drawings.

I have really enjoyed getting to use the blob brush tool. In the past when I would trace over my sketches I mostly used the pen tool. I have found that the blob brush tool saves quite a bit of time. I also have a touch screen laptop and it can be fun to use that to draw over my sketches as well.

Once I had all my sketches traced, I used the paint bucket tool to colorize my digital drawings. I'm very happy with the color scheme that I chose. It's so bright and vibrant, it pulls me right out of Buffalo and into a tropical oasis! One trick I learned about in Bonnie's class that I was not aware of is the recolor artwork tool. This blew my mind!! I am still pursuing my degree in graphic design and there are new things I learn every day. This is such a valuable tool, especially in pattern design. Below are four variations of my Coral Reef pattern design. I hope you all like them. Enjoy!
