Flower Power Illustration

Never tried doing an editorial ilustration and started with the Flower Power article since it seemed the most straightforward.  I started by taking notes on what I felt were the most important points and then doing a bunch of roughs.  I settled on three favourite ideas.

The first depicts a scientist using technology to force flowers to bloom.  The second is a city lit up by the power of plants.  The third was a flower providing energy to several devices by its roots.

I decided to go with the last idea because I had a pretty good idea in my head how I wanted it to turn out and I felt it would be easiest to understand what was going on.

I used a mixture of analog and digital to create the final illustration.  I decided to use a few different devices in my final, and struggled a bit with the colours and how to indicate the electricity going through the plant. It was a real learning experience as I wasn't sure if I wanted to use the extra height in the corner.  I accidentally made my canvas the wrong size (too big) and spent time fixing the mistake.  Then I decided to use the extra space.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with the result.  I'm still not 100% sure of the colours, but as my first editorial illustration I enjoyed the process and look forward to doing the others.
