Float Like a Butterfly...

For this project I chose a butterfly. I started out with a Google image search to create my mood board:

I tend to gravitate toward clean lines, so I really liked the almost straight line of the wings in this image.

Sketching has begun! (I didn't have tracing paper, so I improvised with tissue paper. Don't mind the wrinkles!)

I was distracted in the beginning by tracing and sketching the actual elements of the butterfly. It took awhile to get in the groove of seeing it as geometric shapes and not intricate lines, patterns, etc. I settled on my last sketch:

I first traced my sketch in Illustrator:

The grid process was new to me. At first I didn't really think I knew what I was doing, but after awhile the circles started to make sense. I need a lot of practice, but it definitely helped define the curves and gave me a cleaner design in the end. I found myself going back to the grid over and over again.
