Film Noir - "The stuff dreams are made of..."

I'm in the early stages of my project. So far, I have only done the word cloud and the mood board. I'm aiming to get my pattern design ready for the upcoming "Film Noir" contest. I'm a big fan of classic movies and the first one that instantly came to mind was "The Maltese Falcon." I love the closing line, "The stuff dreams are made of..." and would love to evoke that film and that line in my design (perhaps). My mood board pictures include images of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, the movie poster from "Gilda" and a still from the film "Laura" starring Dana Andrews and Gene Tierney.

PROJECT UPDATE:

I felt like I was on a roll with the project and then I got the flu. Yuck. I haven't been able to work on the project for the past week and the deadline is tomorrow. I plan on submitting a fabric design for the Film Noir contest, but we'll see!

Here is a color version of my motif:

I plan on having the line drawing version of my motif repeating in the background to create more interest. Now to go off to work and see if I can actually make my vision become a reality...

UPDATE:

So, I did manage to come up with a pattern to submit to the Spoonflower Film Noir contest. I think it turned out nice, but I think I could do a better job. I think part of it is that I'm still getting used to Illustrator and understanding how repeats work. I need more practice, but I definitely want to utilize this project space for another future Spoonflower contest.

Here's the pattern I ended up submitting. It's already gotten some likes on Spoonflower:
