Fighting with Sanity

Step 1: Selecting Your Text

My project will be over Spoon River Anthology: Tom Merritt.

AT first I suspected something--

She acted so calm and absent-minded.

And one day I heard the back door shut

As I entered the front, and I saw him slink

Back of the smokehouse into the lot

And run across the field.

And I meant to kill him on sight.

But that day, walking near Fourth Bridge

Without a stick or a stone at hand,

All of a sudden I saw him standing

Scared to death, holding his rabbits,

And all I could say was, "Don't, Don't, Don't,"

As he aimed and fired at my heart.

The reason I picked Tom Merritt is because when I was reading every thought he had, I could feel the pain that he was feeling. I had a sense of sympathy for him as he tried to deal with his wife's unfaithful behavior. It always breaks my heart to see someone who is heartbroken as Tom was at the sight of his wife with another man. I know the feeling of being in love with someone who is with another man and just having that anger build up inside you.

I also thought that this would be a great story to tackle the psychological side of Tom and how he deals with the situation and how the wife and the other man deal with it as well. I'm a huge Alfred Hitchcock fan and my favorite film of his is Psycho. I loved how he got the whole audience to get into Norman Bates' head and see the struggles that he has to go through with his sanity. That is what I want to do with Tom and show the audience what is going on in his head and how it drives him to wanting to kill the guy sleeping with his wife.

To me it's interesting to see how humans' behavior is so different from other people in the world. Sometimes it's hard for me to truly understand what a person is feeling because I have Autism. So when I know what the person is feeling and I can study how that particular person deals with a certain situation, it always catches my attention. I'm looking forward to getting in depth with the story and tackling the different aspects to Tom Merritt and the other characters.

Step 3: Writing Your Logline

"When a married man finds his wife in bed with his young co-worker, his sanity is tested to limits that he never had to deal with before, but will he be the one that goes insane?"

This is my first screenplay and really have no idea what I'm doing with it. Let me know what you guys think of it.
