Facebook Icon / Cover photo for "Feminists @ HK" page

Early this August, my friends invited me to start a Facebook Page to show Hong Kong information about feminism. All of us are good at writing in English, but none of us knew how to design the icon and the cover photo for the page. I volunteered to do some lettering for the icon (so that my part of my daily practice project would be useful).

I first tested out different styles with the pens I have:

7c9c264f

I was trying to fit the words in a square at first so that it would be suitable for the facebook icon. I used a ballpoint pen,  a marker, and a triplus fineliner to test out different words expressed in different fonts. The font is really important as a font that gives a “feminine” or “masculine” impression may affect how readers treat the whole page.

My friends seemed to like the chubby “f”, so I wrote a few more:

7d8a5e5a

a1509cbe

Tried a long “f” and stretched the word out a bit:

e94f53fc

And attempted to use colours:

ae2defda

All of these seems weird, so one of my friends decided to digitise the chubby “f”:

182ced54

It was done with Microsoft Paint…

(But they agree that this should be the icon lol)

I tried to do script writing on the word “feminists” with a mechanical pencil just for fun (and practice):

8e028a6f

I used to “thicken downward stroke method” to add contrast.

(Add fineliner)

I showed this to my friends, and they said that this can be made into a decent cover photos with the word @Hong Kong added.

I purchased brush pens 4 days later and played with them for a while:

My university’s secret page is holding an online “calligraphy” competition, so I submitted this and asked if there will be any workshops:

I decided to add the words “@Hong Kong” with brush pens to the cursive word I did:

Finally, I used PicMonkey to add filters to this photo and fix some details:

And it is done!

Thank you for reading through this project. I hope you like it! :D
