Exploring colours through charts

Exploring colours through charts - student project

I love playing with watercolours and learning how they mix. Using watercolour mixing charts is one way I do this.

My Matrix Chart:

I used 12 colours

  • Lemon Yellow
  • Cadmium Yellow Hue
  • Cadmium Red Hue
  • Ruby Red
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Turquoise
  • Raw Sienna
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Van Dyke Brown
  • Moonglow
  • Indigo
  • Perylene Green

I love how this chart came out and it has shown me some more colour mixes that I love. I particularly love how both blues mix to make purples with the Ruby Red. I also love the moody mixes that can be created with Moonglow and Indigo.

I discovered during making my charts that I really dislike how my Raw Sienna is handling, I'm not sure if the paint is old or what but it feels gloopy. So I might change this out with another brand when I run out.

I chose three colour combinations that I wanted to test.

Lemon Yellow & Cadmium Red Hue: to test Orange mixes and bases for light skin tones.

Ruby Red & Turquoise:  I loved the vibrant purples they created and wanted to see the variances that can come out.

Ultramarine and Moonglow: I loved the Moody mixes that came out with these colours.

I think these mixes came out stunning and love the purples in particular. I will note that it was hard to get the differentiation between the mid-tone and the pure Moonglow. There is a slight difference but it is not much.

I love the almost softness of oranges I got from the cool yellow and warm red. I think I will play around with this more
