Everything You Need to Know to Write Like You Want

Milestones 1-2

Class Description:

In this course, we will break down the fundamental rules and archetypes behind strong writing and compelling stories, with a few hilarious examples and lots of hands-on practice. What it takes to make writing come alive goes much deeper than the basics of grammar and the oft-repeated golden rules. Let us help you avoid triteness, tropes and other troubles with this crushingly candid panel.

By the end of this course, you will be able to write with style, craft effective and believable dialogue, respect your own voice, design realistic and compelling characters, and avoid the cardinal sins of fiction that will make your readers roll their eyes.

Who is this class for?

This course is for beginners and veterans alike who want to take their fiction writing to the next level and go beyond the usual writing tips.

Who is this not class for?

No specific writing background is needed, but the course does assume an understanding of the basic rules of grammar, point of view, etc. This course is not for those who are looking for a first-time introduction to writing.

Project: Write a Powerful Scene

Project Description:

In this assignment, you will be writing (or re-writing) a scene or chapter from a piece of fiction, using the techniques we have learned in this course. The project will be the most useful to you if you tackle a scene from a current work or start a new one, but you can also create a one-off random scene to practice these skills.
