Don't Cry Over Spilled Milk

So it's been a while since I've sat down to draw, I hadn't realized how out of practice I was. Everything is digital these days, and I just rely on my computer to get the end result that's in my head. I love to draw, so this is a great way to get back into it, it's like getting back into excercising, a little slow and labored at first, but feels good to get those muscles moving again.

I came up with a few idioms, my top 3 favorites were:

  1. Don't make a mountain out of a molehill
  2. Bringing home the bacon
  3. Don't cry over spilled milk

You can see my progress for these 3 below.

I"m torn between the molehill and the spilled milk. I quite like my little mole, I think he's pretty cute, but I think the spilled milk version may have a bit more visual interest. I still have to refine them a bit, but I think the ideas are getting there.

I decided to go with "Don't cry over spillied milk", since it had a little bit more to it. I used tear drops/milk drops as letters and incorporated a milk carton spilling over with the milk containing the words "spilled milk". I didn't actually use the word over but it is implied that the words "dont cry" sit over the words "spilled milk". I might try a version with the word "over" in the milk carton once I get it into Illustrator.

Here's my final rendering of my idiom illustration. I must admit the process was a bit tougher than I thought. I haven't really used the Blob tool in Illustrator much, so it took some time to get a handle on the control of it. But once I got the hang of it, I really liked it!  I did cheat with my textures, I didn't print it out, but just brought each of the colour blocks and outlines in separately into Photoshop and just used a mask and a grunge brush. Hope you all like it! Would love your thoughts!
