Donde Brilla la Luz (Where there is light)

Next attemp after feedback and more practice

I really like this one!

Background

I'm a Multimedia Graphic Designer originally from Colombia but I've been living in Australia for more than 10 years. I'm currently learning and practicing my calligraphy since last year, I got books and new pens from Christmas so I've been playing a lot with them. I used to do calligraphy when I was in school but computers came and my handwriting changed quite a lot (and not for the better).

I enjoy doing blackletter but for this project I wanted to use and experiment with something different, less formal and more fun. Plus I don't think the flourishes will go well with black letters as they use lots of square/diamond shapes.

I always do my calligraphy in english so I thought it would be a good change to do something in my native language and I quite like it :) I should do more calligraphy in spanish!

The Project

Donde Brilla la Luz, spanish for Where there is Light, is an amazing book I read a few years ago and I read it again and again whenever I get the time. This book contains a small selection of Paramahansaji's teachings. He was an indian yogi and guru who introduced millions of westerners to the teachings of meditation. His concepts are being used and applied today in education, psychology, medicine and in areas of creativity. His teachings contribute to change our life's vision to be more human and spiritual.

I would like to put the final result in a nice frame or make it into a poster, we'll see :)

Style

I chose a style called 'Ting' from the book 'The Art of Calligraphy and Lettering'. The main features of the letters include curlicues, lots of bounce, and the strategic placement of dots at the end of strokes. I exagerated some of the flourishes in the letters 'n', 'b', 'l' and 'z' and created the curls on the top and bottom. I didn't know what to do with 'la' as it looked like it didn't belong with the other three words so I made it a bit smaller and exagerated the flourishes on both letters.
