Don't sink the boat...

"Don't sink the boat that you built to keep afloat."

I love this song lyric from Flogging Molly. I first heard it when someone in my family was going through divorce. It was heartbreaking to watch the family get torn apart. There are many things in our lives that we've taken time to build and when times get tough, quitting may seem like the solution to fix it. Whether it's your health, debt, relationships, stay strong and plow through, don't sink the boat that you built to keep afloat.

The entire song, this lyric in particular, has a balance of a rustic and masculine feel, anchored with a feminine touch. But in this lies my challenge.

I've never hand lettered and was surprised the toll it paid on my hand to sketch up those five styles. Man, was my hand sore! Wonder if my palm will have a six-pac by the time this is all over.

Anyway, my first exercise is complete. I have no idea what I'm doing but without action there won't be progress...so all feedback is welcome! Rip it apart like a shark!

Narrowed down to three sketches. Wondering which layout or elements work best.

My sketches don't look clean since I don't have the proper tools...YET! They arrive Monday, I can't wait! New pencils, pens, ruler and compass.

As for my horizontal layout, I wanted to use this for my facebook cover photo to serve as a reminder to keep working hard. This past year I've lost 60lbs, paid off all my debt and started working towards my dreams. I don't want all this hard work to slip away.

March 17, 2014 / Happy St. Patrick's Day!

In honor of the St. Patty's Day I wanted to upload my progress on this project since my lyric came from Flogging Molly and some of the lettering on the banner is celtic. I've combined sketch 1 and 3 from above and have been laying it out, sketching some ideas for different elements and saving the lettering for last...maybe because it intimidates me.

I've decided to take this project in a different direction since this is class on hand-lettering and I was playing it safe with 90% hand-drawing. My artograph arrived today so I'm excited to start tracing, cleaning up the layout and trying different letter variations.

This is the one I'll begin refining:

I keep redrawing this layout. I can't seem to get the "o" right in "DON'T". Does the "DON'T SINK" drop shadow over power the design as a whole? Could use some suggestions on where to take these letters next to make them look like they are all united yet different.
