Dilapidated Tokyo

Hi peeps. I decided to do some kanji instead of an English word. These kanji say Tokyo, one of my favorite cities! If you ever get the chance, you should go.

1. Sketch

Here, I tried to figure out the shadows and colors. I'm not sure that I did it right, but oh well.

2. Color wash and sketch

I decided to paint on this slice of wood because honestly, that was all I had. I think it ended up being kinda weird to have a distressed man-made sign painted on wood.... :)

3. Color layering

I did many layers of color, but I didn't take photos of all of them. I think I could work on choosing the final colors a bit better next time.

4. Final Outcome

Detail of painting:

5. Overview

I really enjoyed this painting method! I'm usually a big control freak when it comes to drawing/painting/mark-making so it was nice and somewhat challenging to let go a bit. I think the second kanji turned out a lot better than the first. Not sure why. I'll definitely try this method some more.

Thanks for the class!
