Dia de los Muertos Surface Pattern Design Portfolio

6 September 2015

Well here we are on the last day of the challenge! Frantically trying to get all my files in order so I can upload them. I wound up making a separate collection with a more limited palette and motifs based on the marigolds only. I will use the other artwork for another collection.

This has been a very long process, and I have learned SO much! I have enough ideas for several more patterns and collections from my sketches and research based the same theme. I created a lot more motifs, images and repeats that I wound up not using for this collection. You can see them here.

I have been wanting to do some kind of art for Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) for a long time. It is celebrated from October 31 - November 2 with origins in Mexico, but some in the US only celebrate the final day, November 2. Death is not something to be feared in this culture, but rather, Dia de los Muertos is a time to remember and honor those who came before us, and offer prayers to help guide them on their spiritual journey.
