Destination DC

Hi everyone, I work at an international tourism and travel association, where our members and customers are primarily tourism boards from cities, states, countries, etc. Most have destination videos, but they are expensive to make, run too long, cram too much in, and in general -- are not memorable.

I hope to learn through this project how to create short, meaningful videos that capture a specific feeling a destination can evoke. So, here's my idea for Washington, DC.

Video follows the perspective of a tourist in DC.

It's winter and he's climbing the steps to the Lincoln Memorial. His line of sight focuses on the people: young families, children chasing after ducks, a cyclist as he passes through, lovers holding hands and embracing in the cold, friends laughing as they take pictures.

Suddenly the phone rings and in a mittened hand, you see a young woman is calling.

The tourist removes his other mitten, and an old, gnarled hand comes into view as he presses the answer button, moves the phone to his ear, so that all you see is the exposed hand on a knee.

Voice over the phone: "Hi, Dad! How's your trip going?"

Tourist: "It's great, your mother and I..."

You see a woman's hand come into view and grasp the hand on the knee.

Tourist: "We were just ... "

The shot pans upward and zooms out to capture the entire mall -- you see the World War II and Washington Monument come into view.

Tourist: "Reflecting."

Destination DC logo appears.

Voice over the phone [fading]: "That's awesome! Have you checked out the toy train exhibit at the Botanical Gardens yet?"
