Dead Man's Hand

SELECTING THE TEXT:

I have chosen the character "Ace" Shaw from the Spoon River Anthology for my piece. I found the possible character development from this poem intriguing. A man who loves a good card game yet strong in his belief of God, often times two contradicting subjects. Ace almost appears confused by these two opposing forces. A character playing both sides of the coin will very much be on edge and lift the tension to a shattering level in such a short film.

Ace reminds me of the religious debate that struggles with 'if God is omnipotent then how is there free will or chance in life.' I hope to capture this debate in my story. For this reason Ace will provide much opportunity to discuss the horror of time.

"Ace" Shaw

I NEVER saw any difference

Between playing cards for money

And selling real estate,

Practicing law, banking, or anything else.

For everything is chance.

Nevertheless

Seest thou a man diligent in business?

He shall stand before Kings!
