DW - Surface Pattern Design Explorations

Exploring contrasts I came up with the following:

  • soft/hard
  • up/down
  • in/out
  • wet/dry
  • hot/cold
  • summer/winter
  • apples/oranges
  • sun/rain
  • earth/sky
  • day/night
  • right/left
  • male/female
  • cat/dog
  • cat/mouse
  • land/sea

Then I started sketching, though I didn't get too far with that.

preliminary sketches (from Jan.29/2014)

Tonight (Jan.30/2014) I started in Illustrator and decided to go with the arrows and hearts. I attempted to work with light/dark, geometric/organic and so on. I lost some lines when cropping so the patterns are not quite right but I wanted to get the project started! I will go back and fix them.

The first pair (Valentine's Day inspired).

FEBRUARY 1, 2014.

I worked on the second pair, exploring florals and geometric patterns.

This is influenced by the old saying 'April showers bring May flowers' even though it feels like spring is a long way off.

Finally got to the last set.

APRIL 21, 2014 COLOUR - Repel/Attract

COLOURS THAT REPEL

COLOURS THAT ATTRACT

I found that even though I was attracted to the colours I struggled to arrive at a combination that I liked and I ended up trying to match the overall colour feeling of the image as best I could. I have looked at even more colour combinations than what I posted here and I STILL do not feel able to articulate my personal brand of color. Hmmm...

COLOUR STORY

I am currently working with the Land + Sea patterns. I made a few changes and added some decoration to the mountains. The names are not particularly creative but perhaps something clever will come to me.

APRIL 23, 2014 - PATTERN COLLECTION

Because this was so much fun I went ahead and worked on another pair.
