DUTCH ACRES

Every Fall, my whiskey-sipping, fly-fishing, farm-owning Dutch friend makes a huge batch of "Fish Pickles" (meaning they're extra spicy and keep you warm while ice fishing all winter). He calls his house "Dutch Acres" – this is going to be printed on the labels as a gift to him this year.

I started with some basic Dutch elements - the tulip (inspired the shield shape) and the windmill (duh). For the laurel, I was inspired by barley (whiskey reference).

From there I played around with adding in a jumping fish, whiskey on the rocks, a fishing hook, and some cooking utensils.

And started giving it more dimensionality and really playing up the stroke style of illustration.

I began messing around with the typography, trying to get something a little more dutch and a little more farm-y – and then started adding in color, inspired by the Dutch flag and the wheaty color of barley.

Still not totally sold on color – thoughts?
