BACKGROUND

My goal for this project is to get some practice using Adobe Illustrator. I don't generally do graphic design for my job, but I've been working my way through Illustrator over the past year or so and want to test out some of the skills I've been learning through actual projects.

BRAINSTORMING

When I signed up for this class, I was certain that I was going to illustrate one of two ideas: 1) a series of adult merit badges for things I hope to accomplish in the next year, or 2) a collection of the characters from a story I've been working on. After brainstorming and writing down lists/nets of ideas, my plans have completely changed. I'd like to make badges about something that I'm interested in but don't know much about so I can research and learn something new.

The ideas I'm currently deciding between are:

  • Phonetic alphabets or similar (NATO, IATA, Army/Navy, etc) - I really like this idea and plan to do something with it eventually, but making 26 drawings might be a little ambitious for this class.
  • Bridges - I've seen a lot of great art/infographics about the bridges of various places, like NYC & Portland. I'd like to step this out a bit, and do a series of badges about the different basic types of bridges, like truss, cantilever, etc. (Inspired by some truly awesome books: Infrastructure & The Works.)
  • Construction Vehicles - I love the looks of these (backhoes, bulldozers, etc) and I think it would be fun to illustrate a set.

SKETCHES

I sketched out and brainstormed each of the above ideas. The alphabets were all over the place, and I had trouble forming them into a cohesive set. The bridges were difficult to illustrate using simple geometric shapes – a little too technical. I ended up really liking the construction vehicles. My thought is to focus each badge on one particular vehicle, and have it being supervised/guided by construction workers. The vehicles would be in the process of constructing/deconstructing the borders of the badge.
