Colorado Towns and Cities

I decided to try this class for a variety of reasons. First I wanted to design badges that my students could earn when the complete class assignments. I wanted something that was easy to use and understand in order to accomplish this. I also wanted something fun and creative to work on during summer break. I started by looking at other students projects to get ideas for the topic I wanted to create badges on and the types of styles. I started to brainstorm a list of ideas that I thought would be fun as well as interesting. I went into lucid chart and began to make a mind map.

My first idea was inspired by the creator of this lesson. I really liked what he did with Witchita, and wanted to do something similar with Colorado. I am so proud that I live in Colorado, so I wanted to create something to honor that. My first idea was tourist locations, but I thought that was to cliche, then I thought that badges on the different 14er's would be pretty cool, but turned it down because I thought each badge would be very similar. Finally, I thought badges on the various towns throughout Colorado would be unique and interesting. I figured I would find a landmark or something significant that would represent each town. I choose some of my favorite locations in Colorado: Denver, Boulder, Estes Park, Glenwood Springs, Fort Collins and Buena Vista. Once I had the locations down I started to research the more noteable landmarks in each town, and begun to sketch my badges.

I was trying to play around with the different shapes for each location, I think the square works fairly well. I'm thinking my color scheme will be red/yellow/blue/white based off the Colorado State flag. I need to see how these colors will work on the badges. I also think some of the badges are too detailed (Fort Collins, Estes and Glenwood) so I need to figure out a way to make them effective withouth being too detailed. Any suggestions would be helpful!

Update: June 7, 2014

Here is my first badge. I've never used illustrator before, but I think I'm beginning to understand how it works.

I feel like its missing something, but I'm not sure exactly what is is. I messed around with adding windows to the buildings but it seemed to cluttered. I also thought about adding in the capital building, but it didn't seem to work. I choose this color scheme because of the Colorado State flag, and it seems to work fairly well. I also tried to choose shades in the same color family for the grass and the mountains. Anyways if you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Here is the Boulder Badge. I choose the Flatiron Mountains in Boulder for this badge. It was very hard to create the Flatiron Mountains. I was having trouble getting the angles correct. I also wanted the mountains to look like they were being surrounded by trees, which is why I added the dark green. Then to bring in the red, i decided to bring in red flowers of different heights. I think it adds a nice focal point.
