City of Cleveland Pennant

For my pennant I've decided to celebrate the steel making history of cleveland ohio. The terminal tower is a landmark in Cleveland so it became the center peice of my project. Because a structure of this magnitude could not have been built without steel it had to incorporated into my project also. My first step in brainstroming was to create a visual similar to old school sports pennants. Instead of doing something related to sports I felt like the city itself should be able to shine.

The first image is of a hand lettered type that I wanted simulates steel or resemble a steel beam, it is steel a work in progress and I intend to create a font out of it for ease of use in later projects.

The next step was to create my skyline of the terminal tower then added the steel factory of Republic Steel and I will most likely add some of Cleveland's iconic bridges at a later time.

One of the tihings I'm trying to incorporate is the City name as part of the foundation of the tower written in the hand lettered steel font.

Using the C in Cleveland as a road leading connecting the bridges, the tower and the steel mill to each other and the words STEEL STANDING STRONG, substituting the word STEEL for STILL.

This project took a toll on me trying to get it completed. Having to simply the concept was that easy and sticking to one color also proved a challenge. I wanted to complete it for the sake of complting the goal but overall I am not happy that my skillset didn't allow me to bring the concept to completion.

After the redraw I settled on the new concept.

This was the final redraw.

I tried to make a texture from scratch in illustrator but failed miserably. And I didn't have the color table that Jon showed in his video so I chose a pantone color from one of the solid coated books.

My finished city of Cleveland pennant is this.
