Chicago Badge Design (SAMPLE)

Chicago Badge Design (SAMPLE) - student project

I chose to create a badge for the city of Chicago. While thinking of different icons to represent Chicago, I stumbled upon the lantern. I thought this would be perfect to represent the Great Chicago Fire. The story says that the fire began in the O'Leary barn in Chicago. A cow kicked over a lantern, setting fire to the barn and soon most of the city. This difficult time in Chicago history was met with bravery, and soon the city was rebuilt. This inspired the slogan "The Rise of a City" for my badge.

While looking for inspiration, I thought these badges were very interesting.

I liked the way the sun behind the mountain shined. I also liked the type that followed the path of the circle, as well as the central illustration.

I went to sketching, and after many sketches, I settled on this one.

Once on the computer I used a combination of simple shapes and the pen tool to draw out the lantern and create the background. I used Zona Pro as the typeface and made my badge design one color. After texturing and placing it on a background, I had finished my design.

I want to get this badge design printed as a real patch to be sewn to clothing or anything!
